Harvest 17

Harvest has been going quite well and it is high time I posted an update. We had a great stretch of dry weather to get all of our beans harvested before recent rains set in. The ground is dry enough to soak up this 1.5-2″ and let us back in the fields tomorrow. Although both corn and bean yields vary according to spring drainage and summer rainfall received, both have been surprisingly good with some areas yielding almost as well as last year!

We had a small hiccup on day 2 of harvest that turned up a problem with our tracked tractor that pulls the grain cart. A sudden costly and time consuming track repair had us scrambling to look for options. We were able to locate a good deal on a similar used wheel tractor. Although we liked our track tractor, this wheel machine is just perfect for us: easier to drive, smoother in field and roading, and less costly to maintain! We were back up and running in no time with a tractor better suited for our needs.

Once we got some corn fields complete, our tillage operator, Dave, was quick to get the ripper rolling. He has been following close behind the combine  once fertilizer and lime have been spread, getting compaction and residue managed for next year while conditions are ideal.

Also, below is some footage of bean harvest. A big thanks to my cousin, Troy W., for coming and taking some fantastic aerial footage with his drone!
