Rain, Spraying, and More Rain

The crops got off to a great start with the recent warmth. The corn is dark green and even. The beans seemed to grow a little slowly at first as they dealt with cool temps and growing through the full rates of pre-emergence herbicides required for our non-GMO beans. But lately they have really kicked it in gear! We were able to get all of our corn sprayed in a timely fashion and half of the beans done before the large rains shut us down. In the past week, some of the fields have received 5-7″ of rain. While this amount of rain is never great for the crops, things look to be holding up well with all of our recent waterway shaping, surface drainage, and tile drainage really paying off. Also, we hope that our final application of nitrogen that we will apply with the Y-Drop system as soon as it dries off will help counter some of the effects of excessive rain on the corn crop. We are ready and waiting to finish up spraying and nitrogen application if we get a dry window in the still-rainy forecast.
