We were thankful for a smooth and successful harvest this year. We started on September 12th and finished on October 24th. Yields were much better than expected for such a wet spring and dry summer. We had a couple of bean fields yield 74 bushels per acre and a couple of our largest corn fields average over 230. The non-GMO beans kept up with and even out yielded our Roundup beans, and we are contemplating raising only non-GMO beans next year. Despite the extra work involved, the premium offered for non-GMO beans and the herbicide diversification seem like enough incentive to pursue this market.
After harvest, we focused on completing fall tillage and reshaping waterways that took quite a beating with the multiple deluges this spring. The new Kuntz earthmoving scraper made quick, effective work out of the shaping and helped us achieve greater capacity in the waterways. We also used it to surface drain some ponds that drowned out crop this year.
After completing tillage and waterway work, we are moving right into nitrogen application this week. Hopefully the snow does not prove to be much of a delay!
